The Arenal Rainforest Village is located in Costa Rica’s Northern Zone, often referred to as the ‘Garden District’, at the Edge of the Arenal Volcano National Park and at the foothills of the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve (Monteverde Children’s Rainforest). The village has its road front entrance from State Route 702 between the small towns of San Isidro and Chachagua (GPS coordinates: N 10º 23’ 20”, E 84º 34’ 50”), only 14 km (15 min.) away from the Arenal/La Fortuna tourist attractions.
The ‘Garden District’ is a natural disaster-free sanctuary without earthquakes, flooding, hurricanes, droughts or extreme temperatures. An excellent road system connects the emerald-green dense rainforest reserves with the rumbling volcano and its famous tourist destinations.
The lush vegetation cover is the result of a unique climate which is dominated by the moisture-laden northeastern trade winds blowing in from the Caribbean Sea and supporting the tropical moist forests with its diverse fauna & flora on the Atlantic slope. This climatic pattern shows a robust resistance against the dire consequences of global warming elsewhere. Rainfall peaks in June – July and November – December with the driest period from January to April. The typical day starts with a sunny morning breeze followed by rain showers in the afternoon.
Temperatures are characterized by extremely insignificant seasonal changes. The mean monthly average temperature ranges from 24º to 26º Celsius (75º F to 79ºF) with a minimum of 19º to 21º Celsius (66º F to 70º F) and a maximum of 28º to 30º Celsius (82º F to 86º F). This temperature regime results from the complex interaction of dense forest canopy cover, cloud distribution and rainfall characteristics and provide a very comfortable year-round temperature feeling (warm days, cool nights) with no need of central heating or air-conditioning (good climatic data resource: www.imn.ac.cr).
This climate guarantees inexhaustible drinking-water resources making this part of the planet a sustainable ecological paradise.
The long-term continuity of these favorable ecological conditions is guaranteed by one of Costa Rica’s most extensive conservation area network of State National Parks and prestigious Private Reserves:
Arenal – Tilaran – Conservation – Area (www.costarica-nationalparks.com)
- Arenal Volcano National Park (5,208 ha / 12,860 acres)
- Arenal-Monteverde Protected Area (33,825 ha / 83,585 acres)
- Alberto Manuel Brenes Biological Reserve (7,800 ha / 19,275 acres)
- Arenal Volcano Forest Reserve (250 ha / 615 acres)
- ICE Peñas Blancas Watershed Management Unit (www.watershedmarkets.org/)
This extensive conservation area (part of the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor project) combines more than 47,000 ha (115,000 acres) of primary tropical rainforest and cloud forest under strict environmental protection. The long-term benefits are: well-balanced climatic conditions, excellent drinking-water supply, constant migration of the exuberant tropical forest fauna into the surrounding area (howler monkeys, toucans, macaws, hummingbirds, sloths, etc.), unpolluted and oxygen-enriched air, amongst others.
