Original artwork
Coco Loco Art Gallery is part of the Arenal Rainforest
Village Project and is located at its roadfront side.
The gallery consists of 3 separate buildings nestled into the lush tropical park of the property.
Coco Loco is a FAIR TRADE gallery for fine local artwork with a special focus on Costa Rican indigenous culture.
The gallery also exhibits the original artwork
(arte DK) of the owner, Ruth Deiseroth-Kweton, who
works in her studio next to the gallery.
The selected artwork combines Costa Rica’s tropical flavor with the magical touch of its ethnic diversity and make a perfect decor for any home or office.
It was opened fall 2000 and quickly turned into a popular stop for independent travelers on the way to the Arenal volcano area.
From the very beginning the gallery was managed under
strict FAIR TRADE principles providing support to the local
community.
All items on sale are bought directly from the artist paying a fair price for his work.
All business contacts are based on long-term contracts. We visit the often remote reservations of the tribes personally to assure the quality of the artwork and maintain a sustainable relationship.
We participate in most major craft fairs and cultural
events in the country to keep in touch with the dynamic
development of the country’s craft scene.
Coco Loco Art Gallery is highly recommended in several Costa Rica guide books (e.g. Moon Handbook Costa Rica, 5th Edition 2004, National Geographic Traveler Costa Rica, 2nd Edition 2006, DK Eyewitness Guide Costa Rica, 2005).

Ruth Deiseroth-Kweton is the artist who runs Coco Loco Art Gallery. As a medical consultant she lived and worked more than 6 years overseas in countries like Yemen, Saudi-Arabia and Niger. Inspired by the confrontation with these intense cultures she decided to reflect on her memories and life experiences by painting. She quit her professional career and attended Staedel School of Fine Arts in Frankfurt, Germany for 3 years. In 1999 she decided to leave Germany together with her husband and bought a 20 acres property close to Arenal volcano. October 2000 she opened Coco Loco Art Gallery where she lives, works and exhibits her artwork together with friends from the local art community and native tribes. Her work reflects her very personal interpretation of the individual in contact with different cultures, nature and, above all, itself. Besides the traditional canvas she uses any kind of material to paint and work on: wooden artefacts and surfaces, plant leaves, ceramics etc. She creates masks, vases, mirrors, crosses and paintings. |
